The University of Texas at San Antonio is making significant strides in expanding its presence in downtown San Antonio with the initiation of construction on the San Pedro II building. Valued at $131 million, this facility, also recognized as the Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Careers building, is set to accommodate programs related to business, computer engineering, hardware and software development, and science, along with dedicated spaces for research activities. Financed through bond proceeds supported by the University of Texas System’s Permanent University Fund and State of Texas Tuition Revenue Bond, the 180,000-square-foot structure will feature classrooms, laboratories, and conference rooms.
“Today signifies a significant achievement in realizing a vision that was beyond imagination just 15 years ago – the establishment of a prominent Tier 1 university, acknowledged by Carnegie, at the core of downtown San Antonio,” stated Mayor Ron Nirenberg.
Construction is currently in progress for San Pedro II at the site of the former Bexar County jail, a property that the university acquired from the county in the previous year. Adjacent to San Pedro I, a $90 million, 167,000-square-foot facility that commenced operations in January, San Pedro II is poised to occupy an expansive 180,000-square-foot area. The upcoming structure is designed to house various programs, including those in business, computer engineering, hardware and software development, and science, incorporating dedicated spaces for research activities.
Projected for completion by October 2025, the facility is scheduled to officially open its doors to students in January 2026. This expansion aligns with the university’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art educational spaces to foster excellence in diverse academic disciplines and research endeavors. The strategic location, just across the creek from San Pedro I, establishes a comprehensive campus environment, catering to the evolving needs of students and enhancing the university’s capacity to offer cutting-edge education and research opportunities.
