HOUSTON — The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded Houston Airports and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) $9.6 million under the Airport Terminal Program, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The grant money will fund the reconstruction of the post-security Skyway people mover system at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to improve ADA access and increase the efficient movement of passengers and baggage among the airport’s five terminals. This grant will also fund the reconstruction of the existing terminal people mover railway infrastructure between Terminals A and B, which has reached the end of its useful life, a news release stated.

Bush Airport’s infrastructure improvement project is one of 128 projects selected at 125 airports for $970 million in federal funding available.

“As passenger demand continues to grow, Houston remains committed to delivering a world-class experience at every touchpoint,” said Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports. “Thanks to the FAA, this $9.6 million helps us maintain a critical piece of infrastructure that speeds passengers throughout our terminals while creating good-paying jobs right here in Houston. We’re proud to ensure that Bush Airport continues to serve as a gateway to the world by modernizing infrastructure that supports a safe and seamless journey for the passenger from curb to gate.”

  • In February 2024, the FAA awarded $5.49 million to IAH for restroom upgrades
  • In December 2023, the FAA awarded $30 million to update HFD facilities at IAH and HOU
  • In November 2023, the FAA awarded $40 million to update the airfield HOU
  • In July 2023, the FAA awarded $12 million for sustainability projects at both IAH and HOU
  • In March 2023, the FAA awarded nearly $10 million for updates at IAH

The funding is from the Airport Terminal Program, one of three aviation programs created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The law provides $1 billion annually for five years for Airport Terminal Program grants. In total, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provided a historic $25 billion to modernize the country’s airport infrastructure. Learn more at faa.gov/bil.
