Vladimir Naranjo, President of PMG, Builds Success in Business and Family Through Lessons of Ironman

HOUSTON — For Vladimir Naranjo, P.E., MBA, owner of PMG Project Management Group, LLC (PMG) and widely recognized as the “Ironman of Construction,” every project in construction, project management, engineering services, and consulting is an opportunity to excel.

Since its founding in 2004, PMG Project Management Group, LLC (PMG) has consistently demonstrated that success is a marathon, not a sprint—steadily achieving goals, overcoming challenges, and delivering exceptional results. The award-winning company is dedicated to providing cost-effective, high-quality programs and project management, construction services, and disaster recovery resources.

Vladimir, a licensed civil engineer originally from Colombia, brings over 25 years of experience managing complex programs in the United States and abroad. Before founding PMG, he served as the City of Houston’s chief engineer, where he developed a reputation for leading large-scale projects with substantial budgets and diverse teams. His expertise in project control and quality assurance has been a cornerstone of PMG’s success.

Under Vladimir’s leadership, PMG has established a strong reputation in Houston as a trusted provider of program and project management support, collaborating with leading firms in the region and delivering exceptional results rooted in core values of trust, dependability, quality, resourcefulness, and leadership. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Vladimir draws inspiration from his experiences competing in Ironman challenges—grueling triathlons consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon run. He credits these tests of endurance and perseverance with shaping his resilience in overcoming business challenges while inspiring his family and team.

Obstacles, Challenges and Mental Barriers

During a challenging season for PMG, Vladimir learned that in order to survive the stresses related to work, he not only needed to feed his mental and spiritual health—he also needed to do things that would positively impact his physical health. In January 2014, he was encouraged by a close friend named Cesar Gongora to compete in his first Ironman competition. Since then, Vladimir has competed in 41 Ironman competitions, including two world championships. Because of his participation in these grueling athletic events, he developed the mental capacity needed to maintain his business and home life.

“The Ironman is more mental than physical. Your body can withstand a full day of exercise, but the mind will tell you, ‘It’s so hard.’ ‘Why are you doing this?’ ‘Are you kidding yourself?’ ‘It hurts.’ ‘You’re thirsty.’ ‘You’re hungry.’ ‘What are you trying to prove?’ ‘This is my last one and I’m not doing this anymore.’ All these things are going through your mind,” Vladimir explained. “But when you cross the finish line, you get this satisfaction of receiving your medal. You look back and you realize it was worth it.”

Contracts, Commitment and Training

One of the things that helped Vladimir with his commitment to participate in his first Ironman challenge was signing a contract reflecting his desire to complete the mission.

“They wrote a contract on paper by hand and made me sign it. I had about four months to train. I knew how to swim but I had no technique. He (Cesar) gave me a training plan. I got a bike on Craigslist and started getting ready,” he said.

While training from January to April, Vladimir says he began losing weight, eating better, and sleeping better. He even began changing the course of his business by making better decisions.

“It was really hard and took more than seven hours to finish a half-distance Ironman, but I felt good and knew I needed to continue doing it. Had I not had a contract signed, I probably would’ve quit. When I finished that one, I signed more contracts for more competitions.”

Family and Leadership

Celebrating at the Finish Line

Crossing the finish line during an Ironman challenge feels like a moment of triumph. Vladimir shared that in life and in business, every movement is one step closer to the finish line, and celebrating milestones has given him the motivation to keep striving for more.

“You think about so many things— ‘How long is this going to last?’ ‘Am I going to die?’ ‘I hope I don’t catch a cramp.’ ‘Am I going to have a heart attack?’ You hear stories about people dying. But at the same time, in life, there’s not much of a difference. You’re on the freeway alongside 20,000 vehicles on some days. You’re at work and you have projects where something can possibly happen to you. It’s very similar,” Vladimir explained. “When you cross the finish line during an Ironman challenge, you feel accomplished. Life is a continued race. Work is a continued race, so you compare that to a long-distance Ironman.”

“What we’ve been trying to do in the last five years is build a good foundation for the company to grow in a systematic manner. That’s the key for 2025—to consolidate the position that we have,” Apoorv said.
