New TI Microcontrollers Drive Advanced Edge AI, Real-Time Control for Enhanced System Efficiency and Safety

DALLAS — Texas Instruments (TI) has unveiled two innovative series of real-time microcontrollers (MCUs) designed to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of automotive and industrial systems. These devices, part of TI’s C2000™ portfolio, integrate advanced processing capabilities tailored to meet the growing need for intelligent, energy-efficient designs across various applications.

At electronica 2024 in Munich, Germany, from November 12-15, TI will showcase the TMS320F28P55x and F29H85x series, demonstrating how these microcontrollers enable precise, real-time decision-making through cutting-edge edge AI and robust processing power.

Amichai Ron, Senior Vice President of TI Embedded Processing, highlights the need for more advanced systems: “Engineers increasingly strive to design automotive and industrial applications that are more energy efficient and can make faster decisions, driving a need for more scalable processing power, expanded memory, and on-chip safety and security enablers. For decades, our C2000 MCUs have been enabling manufacturers to measure and efficiently process real-world data. Today’s introduction of enhanced real-time performance and edge AI in our C2000 portfolio will empower engineers to solve more complex problems and reach higher levels of system efficiency, safety, and sustainability.”

TMS320F28P55x Series: Edge AI for Real-Time Precision

The TMS320F28P55x series stands out as the industry’s first real-time MCUs with an integrated neural processing unit (NPU). This breakthrough enables high-accuracy fault detection with minimal latency, offering significant benefits for applications requiring immediate, intelligent responses. By offloading neural network model execution from the main CPU, the NPU delivers five to 10 times lower latency compared to software-based implementations, facilitating faster and more accurate decision-making.

The TMS320F28P55x series is particularly suited for tasks like arc fault detection in solar and energy storage systems and motor-bearing fault detection in predictive maintenance. Through the NPU’s ability to adapt to different environments by training and learning, these MCUs achieve over 99% fault detection accuracy, allowing systems to make well-informed decisions on the spot. Furthermore, TI’s comprehensive AI toolchain, which includes pre-optimized and application-tested models, streamlines AI model development, making it accessible for engineers of all experience levels.

F29H85x Series: Advanced Safety and Performance with a 64-Bit Core

Complementing the TMS320F28P55x, the F29H85x series features TI’s latest 64-bit C29 digital signal processor (DSP) core, engineered for optimal real-time performance with enhanced safety and security features. This series is designed for applications that demand robust security and high-performance processing, making it an ideal choice for automotive and industrial systems that need to operate under stringent safety protocols.
