Turner Houston: Helping to Uplift the Small Business Community
The small business community does have its share of obstacles, especially with how competitive the construction industry is. Small businesses and subcontractors sometimes do not have the advantages that the larger companies have. This has not gone unnoticed by Turner, and to help the small business community be more competitive, they have the Turner School of Construction Management. This is a celebrated partnership with the City of Houston that has been going strong for 21 years. Turner is dedicated to bettering the community through this program that focuses on providing opportunities for small and minority companies so that they can grow and develop from small to medium-sized and large-sized companies. This training program, designed to enhance the technical and managerial skills of small contractors and entrepreneurs, has graduated over 1,000 local men and women.
This eight session program enhances the technical and managerial skills of small contractors and entrepreneurs in the construction industry with the following sessions:
• Developing a Business Plan

Turner Houston: A Culture of Diversity and Inclusion
There is a culture of diversity and inclusion at Turner. The company is committed to expanding the opportunities available to small, minority and women-owned businesses. Turner was the first major builder in the country to incorporate a dedicated Community Affairs department in its organizational structure, focusing on promoting business opportunities for historically disadvantaged businesses and educating local youth on the design and construction industry. Their objective is to continue to improve the economic viability of these growing firms through outreach and education as well as through direct partnership. Turner’s goal is not just to meet the designated goals or requirements for inclusion on projects, but it is to grow the capacity of their SWMBE partners. This means growing their partner’s ability to take on more work and to ultimately grow their technical abilities so that they grow into sustainable capacity businesses.
Turner: Building for a Better Environment
Turner builds not only for the client, but the community, which includes building with the environment in mind. The Turner name also stands for sustainability. The company has a clear and consistent commitment, building green and being green. Turner delivers ever-greener buildings to clientele, reducing the environmental impact of operations and supply chain. With more than 1,500 LEED Accredited Professionals and $5.7 billion in Green Construction Revenue/Volume in 2015; Turner is recognized by the USGBC and leading industry journals such as Engineering News Record as the undisputed “Top Green Builder” in the country every year since 2008. The emphasis of being green doesn’t stop with the construction, but it is emphasized with education and training for all Turner staff. Turner manages the company in a sustainable way, meaning they take responsibility for how work on each of their job sites affects the surrounding communities.
Turner Houston: A Spirit of Community
Just as Turner Houston is active in business, they are also paying it forward in our community, committed to the communities where they build. There is a strong culture of community service and giving amongst all the Turner offices, including Turner Houston. Though Turner is one of the nation’s largest builders, they have a strong focus on being “More than Bricks and Mortar” and giving back to its local communities. Turner Houston was chosen to host the conference in recognition of their longstanding commitment to Community Affairs in the Houston area.
