DALLAS — In December 2022, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to join the Airports for Innovation (A4I) network, a global coalition of 10 airports working together on next-generation solutions to enhance the passenger experience. According to a news release, DFW is the only U.S. airport in the network.

A4I focuses on three key objectives: designing innovative solutions to enhance the traveler experience, fostering the adoption of customer-friendly technologies across its airport network and suggesting models that can be standardized and adopted by the broader aviation community.

The first joint initiative of the A4I network is an open call for startups to present breakthrough solutions. Submissions opened on Sept. 12, inviting high-tech, innovative ideas from the startup ecosystem to shape the future of airport travel.

Startups can submit their solutions in four key areas:

• Seamless Travel: The Seamless Travel Experience challenge seeks innovative solutions that leverage digital technologies to create an efficient and customer-centric journey from booking to arrival.

• Sustainable Aviation: The Sustainable Aviation challenge aims to find solutions that reduce airports’ environmental impact and prepare them for the transition to net-zero aviation.

• Smart Luggage: The Smart Luggage Revolution challenge aims to reinvent luggage integration in travel, focusing on solutions that enhance convenience, security and sustainability for travelers.

• AI-Powered Airports: The AI-Powered Airports challenge seeks AI solutions to improve operational efficiency, customer experience and airport management.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to pilot their solutions in real airport environments, including possibly at DFW.

Startups founded between Jan. 1, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2022, are eligible to apply. DFW encourages interested companies to visit the A4I website to learn more and submit their proposals.
