Milestone ceremony marks connection between the region’s two largest transportation investments.
The Loop 1604 North Expansion has reached a major construction milestone as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) celebrated the start of construction on Segment 6. The project will complete the final segment of the $1.4 billion expansion and create a key connection to the $3.5 billion I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX), linking two of the San Antonio region’s largest transportation investments.
With the turn of a shovel, TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams and FHWA Administrator Sean McMaster were joined by Texas Transportation Commissioner Alex Meade, TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Charles Benavidez, P.E. and other regional transportation leaders to commemorate this milestone.
“Under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Sean Duffy, we are committed to getting America building again,” said Federal Highway Administrator Sean McMaster. “This project is one of the most impactful in the country: relieving congestion, improving safety, and enhancing commuting times for all who rely on this critical corridor. It’s a prime example of why the Federal Government is investing nearly $790 million in this project – to help it become a reality.”
The $182 million Texas Clear Lanes project will improve Loop 1604 from Judson Road to I-35 and complete the final segment of the $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion. Once complete, Segment 6 will create a seamless connection to the $3.5 billion I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX), linking corridors that are transforming mobility throughout the region.
“San Antonio is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, and investments like Loop 1604 and I-35 NEX are critical to keeping people and freight moving safely and efficiently,” said Marc Williams, TxDOT executive director. “Breaking ground on Segment 6 marks an important milestone, creating the final connection between two of the region’s largest transportation investments and bringing us closer to a more connected, safer and reliable transportation system.”
Together, these projects represent nearly $5 billion in infrastructure improvements designed to reduce congestion, improve connectivity, enhance safety and support economic growth in one the fastest-growing regions in the country.
“Reaching this milestone took years of coordination among our planning, design and construction teams,” said Charles Benavidez, P.E., TxDOT San Antonio district engineer. “Through an accelerated delivery approach, we advanced all six segments of the
Loop 1604 North Expansion from planning to construction within six years. That commitment has allowed us to deliver critical mobility improvements sooner and bring us one step closer to a more connected transportation system for the San Antonio region.”
Pulice Construction, Inc. will be awarded the contract for construction services. The project is expected to be complete in 2029. Segment 6 will provide the final link between the Loop 1604 North Expansion and I-35 NEX corridors.
